Outreach: Yarn Santas

This activity is probably best for older children. A nice idea is to assemble a kit with the materials in a ziplop bag. This ensures that everyone has exactly what is needed.

Materials

  • 4x4" piece of cardboard (for wrapping/measuring the yarn)
  • 120" Red 'Chunky' Wool-Ease yarn (for the body and legs)
  • 180" Grey 'Worsted' Wool-Ease yarn (for the arms)
  • about 12" of each color of yarn (for tying off legs and arms)
  • one wooden sphere (for the head)
  • one cotton ball (for the beard)
  • one isosceles triangle of felt (4? base, 2? tall) (for hat)
  • one jingle bell or pompom (for decoration on the hat)

Start with a piece of cardboard about 4? square. Wrap the grey yarn around it about 20 -30 times, take off. Wrap the red yarn also about 20-30 times.

Put the grey yarn inside the red and tie at the waist, ankles and wrists. Leave the ankles untied to make a skirt. Trim hands and feet so they are even.

Glue on a wooden ball for a head. Make a little hat from felt, and a beard and hair from wool or a cotton ball (or braids for a girl) and thread a string through the hat to hang it. You can also put a small pom-pom or jingle bell on the hat. Draw eyes and mouth with a colored pencil.
