Outreach: Woven Heart Baskets

This activity is great for all ages. It can be made simpler for small hands by cutting fewer slits. Weaving a heart with more slits is a much trickier endeavor, so that variation is best for older children or adults.

Materials:

  • Paper of various colors. Shiny paper can be very pretty.
  • A traditional combination in Sweden is red and white or green and white.

Cut out two pieces of paper in two different colors. Use these instructions for each:

  • Fold the piece of paper in half.
  • Sketch a shape that is a half-circle with a rectangle at the bottom (the fold is at the end of the rectangle furthest away from the half-circle.
  • Cut one or more slits in the rectangular part, starting from the fold and ending at the imaginary diameter line of the half-circle. [Fewer slits will be easier to weave; more slits make for a slightly more complex pattern.]

Carefully weave the two halves together, working the strips gradually together.

To finish, staple or tape a small strip to the top to hang it by.
