Outreach Activities: Decorating

It is fun to create a setting that helps give a sense of Sweden. Below are some ideas we have used. We provide a separate page with pictures of decorating ideas.

  • Hang wide strips of blue and yellow paper on the walls (this can go a long way toward covering the "everyday" decorations of a room).
  • Large areas of decorative pictures / installations.
    • Create a large maypole on the wall using green paper, streamers, and cut-out flowers for the rings that hang from each cross-piece. (Note: the Swedish maypole does not have streamers hanging down -- that is an English tradition.)
    • Create a model of a traditional Swedish cottage ("stuga") using colored paper. This can be especially fun if it spans a corridor and serves as a doorway.
    • Create a Viking ship picture.
    • Draw a large picture of a Viking.
    • Create a gallery of Swedish pictures and posters.
    • Hang tapestries, blankets, and fabric pieces.
  • Create posters on various topics. Here are some ideas we had:
  • The Swedish flag can play a role in many ways.
    • A large flag can be set near the central point of the activities.
    • A string of flags can be hung across one wall or from one side to the other of a corridor.
    • Small decorative flags (on toothpicks or slightly larger) can come into service in various ways.
  • A large map (see links page for one possibility) or globe can be useful in explaining the location, climate, and seasons.
  • Touch and feel table
    • The opportunity to manipulate items can be exciting, especially for smaller children.
    • We have collected ideas for what might be included on the page with ideas for items to share.
